Sew is Life is written by E. It is a little space of blogging bliss inspired by art, design, craft, fashion, beauty and wellness. Based in Perth, Western Australia. Read about the daily ramblings of me being a mother of three and wife to an amazing creative man. The second me makes fresh skincare at SELF Organics. These are my stories sewn together with love.

It’s really strange how all my children’s birthdays are gathered together during the same time of year. My little boy’s comes first on the 23rd July, then my baby is expected soon after that and my oldest is on the 5th August. My husband and I always joke about this ‘fertile’ period.
For the rest of my life I will be planning 3 birthdays at the same time! And hopefully when they are older, they will be used to the idea of sharing their birthday celebrations together…hahaha I’m just dreaming…
Here are some tips on how to plan a kids birthday party:
1. Book your venue at least a month in advance, popular places get snapped up very quickly! And you will most likely have to pay a deposit.
2. Give out invitations early, at least 2-3 weeks before the date to allow for timely responses from invitees and for you to confirm numbers for venues
3. Order a cake at least a week before, depending on your cake maker. If you are adventurous and want to make the cake yourself plan this out a week in advance, so you can purchase ingredients and decorations. Bake the day/night before the party (buying a cake will definitely help you save time)
4. Buy decorations and lolly bags. Stock up on cheap lollies from supermarket sales or go to a store that sells these in bulk.
5. Plan your child’s birthday clothes and footwear, depending on the weather and activity. And possibly a change of clothes (there is no guarantee against spills and food smears! No point stressing, it will happen!)
6. Have your child’s favourite toy or blanket ready for those tearful moments. Having a birthday can be HARD WORK for a little one!
7. Cater for the adults too, parents will often accompany their child to the birthday party if they are still under the age of 6.
8. And of course presents! I like to buy little things and wrap them up individually because kids love the thought of having a lot of gifts to open :)
Here are some of my favourite venues and places to shop for birthday things around Perth:

Do you have any other party planning tips to share?
Cath Kidston is currently have up to 50% off on their online store. One of their signature pieces is their oil cloth bags. These are available with 30% off for a limited time only. I have always wanted to own a Cath Kidston bag for the stunning fabric and the Vintage design, but I think a new nappy bag has to come first! The designs are about 'Mixing the whimsical, the classic and the nostalgic' . There are some bags in pretty pastel shades that bring the ‘Spring’ mood a little earlier ;) Here are some of my picks from the sale, there are loads more to check out on the website.
Do you own more than one everyday/Main bag?
It’s been a while since I have completed a sewing project. It’s been a bit of a battle sitting down in front of the sewing machine too long with my reach getting further and further from me because of my ‘Buddha’ belly. I can’t keep away from my ‘sewing-sister’ too long though, otherwise I get the sewer’s ‘Itch’.
So…right now I am going through a headband phase. I don’t usually wear headbands, but I love the thought of having a few different patterned ones for when baby arrives.
One particular reason, my hair has grown at legendary speeds due to the pregnancy growth hormone. Plus I had a big chunk of hair snipped off last November in Malaysia and I have noticed it has grown 5 inches longer in the past 8 months. It’s become thick and unruly, but definitely healthy and shinier.
Here is how my headband turned out. I am going to make a matching one for my friend, who is having a birthday soon. This is a perfect present idea for a girlfriend.

Some sad news came from Lime Crime Head Quarters today. They have stated that they will no longer be producing their loose eye shadows, or also known as ‘Magic Dust’. The loose powder collection will cease and they will continue to make pressed eye shadows. I’m more partial to the fact that these were loose powders rather than pressed eye shadows because the application is much easier (in my opinion) and more versatile. These loose powders have been known to create interesting lipstick and nail polish shades which have enabled Lime Crime fans to break out their creativity!
This is your last chance to pick up your favourite shade in the loose magic dust, just enter the coupon code at the checkout: EXTRAMAGIC to get 15% off
(The complete Magic Dust Collection is exempted from this offer)
Be quick as they will be sold out within 2 months, I won’t be surprised if they sell out before then! Click here to shop NOW (some colours are already low in stock…)
Here is some photos of the entire collection I bought last year at one of their online sales. My favourite shade is ‘Cupcake Theif’, a light soft pink shade that is great for highlighting cheekbones too!

2012 has definitely taken me in a different direction in my life. I never knew that I would be making my very own skin care and having a new passion to fulfil which is improving my overall wellbeing and my family’s. It was such a treat for me to take my Mum along to the one day workshop called ‘DIY Skincare’ at Endeavour College, in Perth. We started off our Mother’s Day celebrations a little early by attending together. It was an extra special day for me because I miss our mother & daughter moments where it would just be us two doing something fun. I guess ever since I became a Mum myself, I forgot I was also a daughter!
OOOooo so excited to be here!
Now a little bit about the college, Endeavour College of Natural Health was formerly known as Australian College of Natural Medicine. They provide short one to two day courses to full length high education qualifications on areas such as Naturopathy, Musculoskeletal Therapy, Nutritional Medicine, Massage Therapy and more. Wanting to feed my knowledge in the field of natural and organic skincare, I thought of giving the one day workshop a go.

We basically got in there and caused a stir (Get it? Lame joke wasn’t it?)! Well we did stir up some yummy concoctions, it could have been mistaken for a cooking class…and made beautiful potions and lotions to take home with us. The smells in the laboratory were absolutely invigorating, I felt like such a cosmetic professional :) The power point presentation was lead by our trainer Karen Cashmore, but we were hardly in our seats - it was pretty hands on. And our noses were worked quite a bit too…sniffing all those lovely essential oils.

Some useful books to source recipes and information about how to make your own skincare
The cost of the course is $225, but you receive plenty of handouts. There is also a short video. And loads of information on where to buy supplies and packaging. You also get to keep your hand made goodies and go home and create your very own 'spa' experience. It is a full day class from 9-4:30pm, however we left early because it was a small group. Karen is a very friendly and warm teacher. She is a wealth of knowledge when it comes to natural skin care.
Have you made your own skin care from ingredients you found at home? Tell me how your experience went!
The rain just started to fall and what do you know??? There comes the tickle in the throat! Why is that when the weather suddenly changes that the body goes into wacko and puts itself into ‘sick’ mode. I am not at the ‘sick’ stage yet, but this tickle is niggling at me whenever I swallow. I want to stop it becoming a fully fledge cold! I have cancelled out the flu, as I took the flu injection months ago.
Who said honey and lemon tea has to be drunk from a tea cup?
So here are some of my defense methods to beating this ‘THING’:
Is anyone else feeling the effects of this sudden change in weather? What are some of your tips for kicking the cold?
Let’s stop feeling sorry for ourselves and imagine we are cast away to a warm paradise.
